Offload Your Spine, Part II: Land Exercise for Spinal Resilience

Blog

As we said in the first part of this post, low back pain is increasingly common — we all know someone who has been laid out by a bout of it. It has grown into one of the greatest contributors to lost productivity each year.

What causes low back pain?

Often there is no single cause. A combination of these puts you at greater risk:

  • A prior history of back pain — a first episode often leads to recurrence in time
  • Age
  • Obesity
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Heavy or frequent lifting
  • Long periods in loaded, flexed spinal positions — sitting, for instance

How can LiquidGym help?

We have a range of specialised therapy and training equipment and strategies for addressing low back pain and building the resilience of your spine — and not only in the water.

The TRX training system

TRX is a fine way to bring both full-body balance and core stability into a low back pain programme.

Every strength level can use it with tailored exercises. Most importantly it helps you move in a biomechanically sound way, engaging the core consistently and protectively, building strength, endurance and resilience in the muscles that support your spine.

The sit-to-stand machine

To build up to other functional movements that rely on spinal stability — the squat, for example — a more specific sit-to-stand movement can be the right starting point.

Isometrics

Finally, a series of core exercises in stable, unmoving positions is central to most core strength programmes. They strengthen the core musculature without putting potentially harmful stress on the spine.
